During the Middle Ages, Sevede consisted of present-day municipality of Vimmerby, but also of the northern parts of the parish of Kristdala as well as the entire parish of Misterhult. The district stretched from the in-lands, with Vimmerby as a commercial and judicial centre, to the coast with the harbour at Figeholm.
Sevede means "a rich flow of water", and refers to the upper currents of the Stångå River.
Sevede belonged to Kalmar Castle County during the Middle Ages, and was controlled by the bailiff at Kalmar Castle.
