Tjust in the Middle Ages

Tjust in the Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages Tjust consisted of the municipality of Västervik and of the southern parts of Östergötland.

The centre of Tjust was the town of Västervik.

The name Tjust is related to the word "tjuta", which means to howl. It must have something to do with the very windy weather of the region. The District Court had its seat in Västervik.

From the early 13th century to the first half of the 14th century, Tjust belonged to Kalmar Castle County. Around 1360, Stäkeholm Castle County was established. It was managed by the bailiff at the Castle of Stäkeholm and included Tjust as well as the southern parts of Östergötland. This means that the people of Tjust were dependant on the bailiff at the castle.
