The Church and the Christian faith played a major part in the lives of the people during the Middle Ages. Priests, monks and friars who went on pilgrimages and studied abroad, had far-reaching contacts in other countries. The saints were role-models to the people. Most people in Europe belonged to the Catholic church. Some parts of eastern Europe, for example Russia, belonged to the Orthodox church.
