During the Middle Ages, trade was lively in the Baltic region. During the 11th and 12th centuries, many ports became very important. At this time, the Danish Guilds of Knut (Canute in English) dominated the trade on the Baltic Sea . In the 13th and 14th centuries, the Hanseatic League became the largest trading company. The herring fishery and the fairways contributed to the increasing trade.
