In the towns and on the plains, people lived close to one another. In the forests, however, the farms lay isolated, surrounded by miles and miles of woods. Through the woods ran paths and tracks which the travellers followed. Goods would be loaded on horses. It could be very dangerous to travel through the woods, especially if one ´s goods was valuable.

The quickest and safest way to travel was by sea. It was also the best and indeed only way to transport large quantities. However, the changeable weather and the pirates were a constant threat. To ensure a safe passage, one often sailed along the coast.
