Norway

Norway During the Middle Ages, Norway was sparsely populated. The inhabitants made a living from fishing and tending live-stock. Most peasants did not own their own land but leased it from the Church. German merchants, living in Bergen, Nidaros (Trondheim) and Oslo, controlled all trade. The dreaded plague, or Black Death, arrived in Bergen in 1349, and this epidemic affected Norway severely. Norway was united to Denmark between 1380 and 1814, and with Sweden during the Kalmar Union. The Patron Saint of Norway is Olaf.
