Denmark

Denmark During large parts of the Middle Ages, Denmark was one of the most powerful countries in Europe. Denmark was strategically situated between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and had useful contacts in all directions. The aristocracy was very influential in Denmark. Very few peasants owned their own farms. Most of them were tenant farmers who leased their land from the nobility or the Church. The Kalmar Union, which was established at the end of the 14th century, made Denmark a great and powerful nation. Queen Margareta steadily ruled Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The Union lasted - with some interruptions during the second half of the 15th century - until 1524. The union with Norway lasted until 1814. The Patron Saint of Denmark is Knut or, in English, Canute.
