During the Middle Ages, fishing was extremely important, both on the coast and in the archipelago.
Fishing-farmers would pay parts of their taxes in fish. They would go out to the islands, and temporarily settle there to fish. They built simple huts from wood or stone. Here, they stayed during the season, when the fishing was good. Later they returned to their farms on the coast. Remnants of the fisher-men ´s dwellings (so-called "tomtningar") can still be seen on Furö and Runnö.
