Professions

People living in the towns were either merchants or craftsmen. The merchants traded with different merchandise and the craftsmen produced necessary things possible to sell. They had associations looking after their interests. The merchants belonged to trade-guilds and the craftsmen to craft-guilds.

Throughout the Middle Ages most townspeople kept animals: horses, cows, pigs and hens. They also grew their cabbage and onions on the town’s farmland.
