The Church was important in the medieval town. It was responsible for services and cure of souls, but also for medical care, old people’s homes and schools. Monasteries and nunneries were also of great importance. Not only prayer meetings and masses were held there, but political gatherings too. There were also guestrooms for travellers. Priests, monks and nuns were highly respected in town.
