The decline of the Hanseatic League

The decline of the Hanseatic League

In the beginning of the 16th century, new navigation routes were established and trade changed radically. Old commercial routes on land were no longer used. Amsterdam, near the Atlantic coast, became an important port during the 15th century. Now, Amsterdam replaced Lübeck as the leading port in northern Europe. From now on, the goods was exported to the Baltic region by way of Amsterdam.

The position of the Hansa weakened during ongoing conflicts between the old Hanseatic towns. Local craftsmen and merchants wanted more influence in the towns were trade often was controlled by foreign traders and merchants. In 1669, the last Hansa days took place in Lübeck. Now, the era of the Hanseatic League was over for good.
