"Grane carried the gold off the heath
Sigurd drew his sword in anger
victory over the dragon he won
Grane carried the gold from the heath"
That is the refrain in the tale of Sigurd Fafnesbane, Sigurd the Dragon Killer. He is called Fafnesbane, because the dragon he kills is called Fafner. Sigurd robs the dragon of its treasures. The treasure, however, only causes him troubles and he has many adventures. In the end, Sigurd is murdered by his foster brother. When he is dead, his wife Gudrun mourns him.
"Then Gudrun wished to die
weighed down by sorrow,
she watched over Sigurd ´s dead body
she did not weep, nor wring her hands
or wail, like women do"
