This is a story about a princess who wants to have three singing leaves. Having searched for a long time, her father finds three such remarkable leaves. In return, the King has to promise to give the first person he meets when he comes home to the owner of the leaves. As the King approaches his castle, the first person to greet him is his daughter, the princess. Here, the King has just handed over his daughter.
"Soon it became quite still. The clatter from the horses ´ hoofs became fainter and fainter. The ground now opened under the princess and slowly, she sank through it. She found herself standing in a large hall. Never had she seen such a hall! It was huge and lavishly decorated with gold and silks. Tall candles were burning in richly wrought silver candle-sticks. A fire crackled in the fireplace. But there was no-one to be seen. The princess walked around, looking at all this splendour. There were so many delightful things to be seen, that she almost forgot her grief. Suddenly, the candles and the fire went out. The princess heard a door being opened and light footsteps approaching. Someone took her hand.
"Good evening, my princess", said a deep and friendly voice. All her fear disappeared at once.
"Sit down", said Prince Hat, "and I will tell you why I have caused you and your father such sorrow. I am the ruler of a great and powerful kingdom and I have three sisters. They are all queens and live in splendid castles. But there is a mean witch who wants me to marry her. She has cast a spell on me and now I can never show myself to any human being. But if you will become my wife and stay faithful to me without seeing my face, the spell will be broken. If, however, you say no, or if you break your vows, then I will be lost to the witch. Now, tell me what you want. I will not force you into anything. If you so wish, you may return to your father ´s castle."
Of course, the princess wants to help Prince Hat, and so she stays with him. You can read this story in a book of Swedish fairy-tales.
