During large parts of the Middle Ages, there was unrest and there were wars. The King needed soldiers, knights and mounted noblemen as well as armed peasants and hired mercenaries. The weapons of the soldiers could seriously injure the enemy. The King and the aristocracy built castles in order to defend the country, but also to show off their power and to control different regions of the country.
