During the Middle Ages, the people of Öland had their own trade with foreign countries. Lime-stone, butter, cheese, cattle, horses, fur and cod was shipped to Danzig and Lübeck from Borgholm. Back came salt, timber, hop and cloth. A large part of this trade was conducted through Kalmar.
Sikavarp, in the parish of Bredsättra, was an important commercial centre during the Middle Ages. The herring fishery was very important at this time, as well as the export of lime-stone.
