Ebbe the blacksmith lived in Kalmar around the year 1400. He had his home and workshop at Husgatan, just beside Kalmar Castle. There were several smiths in Kalmar. They each had their own specialities such as knives or swords, large or small objects. Ebbe made spurs. He could forge a lot of things, but he was particularly good at making spurs. When he did not have any orders to make spurs, he would forge knives, bowls, pots and arrow-heads or hooks. The iron was delivered by the iron-farmers who lived in the woods. It would take them a whole day to travel to Kalmar. The farmers came to town several times each year to sell their ware.
1397 probably was a very hectic year for Ebbe. He might have had to forge spurs for all the men who were to be knighted at King Erik ´s coronation. All recently dubbed knights had to wear golden spurs as a sign of their new knight-hood.
