Avaskär was a small but important town in the east of Blekinge, not far from the Swedish border. The town was founded by the King of Denmark . Here he could control the border and support the border stronghold Brömsehus. As the town lay on the borders of Sweden and Denmark, it was frequently attacked, burned and destroyed, for example during the Union Wars in the 15th century. In 1600 Avaskär was replaced by the newly founded fortified town of Kristianopel.
