Early Middle Ages 1000 - 1200

Möre and Öland lay on the border between Sweden and Denmark. During the early Middle Ages the Danes were very influential on Öland. Gråborg became a commercial centre as well as a centre for the members of the Danish Guilds of Knut ( Canute in English). The Swedes created their own strongholds in the region during late Iron Age and early Middle Ages. They founded Kungsgården in Hossmo and the fortress of Eketorp on Öland. To the Swedes, Hossmo was an important place. Perhaps Hossmo was a centre for commerce and trade as well. Early on, a stone church was built near Kungsgården (around 1120). The Crown might have had its military port at Boholmarna. Perhaps the soldiers lived in Rinkaby in the parish of Hossmo. Downstream on the Ljungby river, the estuary was barred by a stone construction. It was built to prevent enemy ships from sailing upstream. Hossmo was a royal stronghold at Hossmo until the end of the 12th century. Then the Castle of Kalmar took its place.

Probably the Möre District Council had its seat at Tingby in the parish of Dörby, 10 kilometres to the west of Kalmar.
