During the Middle Ages, Kalmar was divided into several districts – "folkland". Every district had its own District Court. At the district courts landowners would meet to discuss and decide on important matters.
In the county of Kalmar these districts were: Möre, Handbörd, Stranda, Aspeland, Sevede and Tjust. Öland was its own district.
The district law in this region was the same as in Östergötland until the first half of the 14th century. In the 1350: s Sweden got a common land -law and one town - law.
The entire county of Kalmar belonged to the diocese of Linköping during the Middle Ages. The bishop lived in Linköping.
