Roskilde, located on the Roskilde fjord, was founded at the end of the 10th century and became an Episcopal seat around 1020. During the 11th and 12th centuries, the town was one of the most important towns in Denmark. When Copenhagen grew at the beginning of the 15th century, Roskilde ’s importance decreased. After the reformation in 1536, it was no longer an important town.
Many Danish kings are buried at the cathedral of Roskilde. The construction of the cathedral began in 1190. The oldest royal tomb is the grave of the Union Queen Margareta. She died in 1412.
