Ribe is the oldest town of the Nordic countries. It was founded around 710 and became an Episcopal seat in 948. The town grew rapidly in the 11th and 12th centuries. Ribe was at that time one of the most important commercial ports. Mainly farm produce was exported.
The cathedral school from 1145 and the great Roman church still dominate the town today. Other medieval buildings are St Catherine ´s Convent Church from 1428 and the Dominican friary from 1228. The Town Hall and Ribershus Castle are also medieval. In addition, there are several medieval town houses left.
