Danzig or Gdansk lies where the River Vistula flows into the Baltic Sea. From the beginning it was a small Polish village which developed into a fortified town during the 12th century. Danzig was granted a town charter in 1286.
During the 14th century the town became important to the Hanseatic League. In 1454 Danzig became Polish again.
For a long time, Danzig was one of the most important ports on the Baltic and became a very prosperous town.
Many medieval buildings and churches, such as the Town Hall, are still standing today.
