About legacies

About legacies

"If a citizen or his wife dies, and they leave children, son and daughter, then the son inherits as much as the daughter and the daughter as much as the son".

In the towns, the daughters inherited as much as the sons. In the country-side, the daughters only inherited half of what the sons did. Perhaps it was an advantage that the daughter of a craftsman or merchant received half of the legacy. In this way, the man she married could take over the workshop or business.
