The oath of a freeman

"I ask God and all saints to help me, as truthfully as I wish and will be faithful to my King, to fulfil all my duties to the town to my ability, as said before, to help my fellow citizens within the country and abroad, and neither oppress nor harm anyone, who has not committed a crime".

This was the promise of a person who wanted to be accepted as a citizen or freeman, in a Swedish medieval town. It is written down in the Town Law of Magnus Eriksson, the King’s section, chapter XV, paragraph I. A freeman also promised to stay in the town for at least six years. The names of all new citizens were written down in the town book, Tänkeboken.
