The peasants out on the countryside had many contacts with the towns. They bought and sold goods at the fairs. When they were in town they heard news and perhaps visited the tavern. Other contacts with the town were not as nice for the peasants, for instance when they had to pay taxes to the royal bailiff or do labour service at his castle.
